The archaeological fame of the Douro is earlier than that of the vine. Indeed, people passing through the region have discovered the wealth of its subsoil. They explored gold and tin, which were abundant and could be extracted by rudimentary means used in prehistoric times. From tin to wine there was only one step. It is on the left bank of the Pinhão River, known as ancestral, that is the “Quinta do Estanho”. Its name is derived from the mineral that proliferated there (estanho in Portuguese means tin). After the exploration of the subsoil has come the cultivation of the vine.
